Champagne Charlie was originally a nickname given to French Champagne merchant Charles Heidseick in the 1850s. Subsequently it has come to be used as a nickname for anyone who lives a Champagne lifestyle in a metropolis. Lord Carrington, the Governor of N.S.W, adopted this name as he was notorious for drinking champagne every breakfast.

Building History
In 1912, the owner of the Carrington, Sir James Joynton Smith declared he wanted a bank on the premises and this building was built & opened in June 1912 as a branch of the City Bank of Sydney. The upper story was the residential quarters of the first manager, Mr Hosie.
The building remained a bank until the 1930’s when it became the Carrington Saloon Bar. Along with the rest of The Carrington Hotel it was forced to close in 1986, but was renovated and re-opened in 1992.
